The Pod Blog

For the Grade 6 and 7 students I work with

Living Things

Grade 7:

•  Read pages 75 to 77 in your Science Textbook.  Write definitions for all the words bolded in yellow.  On your own read the instructions for the Alien Invaders activity on page 77 and choose a species from the list.  Answer the questions from question #2 and then create a cartoon strip that shows the answers to these questions.

•  Using Google Earth, explore the Jasper National Park area.  This link will take you to pictures I took there in July 2008.  Using a Venn diagram, select images from the picture gallery or the Google Map page, to compare and contrast the geography / topography of Mt. Edith Cavell with our own.  (You can use Inspiration software to do this.)  Now identify some problems or areas that might lead to environmental damage – then suggest ways to prevent or repair this damage.  Create a Podcast in GarageBand using the images and your ideas.

Grade 6:

•  Read pages 60 to 68 in your textbook and answer the questions on page 69.  Then read pages 70 to 83 and answer the questions on page 84.

•  Using Inspiration software create the following concept maps:

a tree diagram showing 7 levels used to classify living things
a concept map showing the 5 (or 6) Kingdoms and their characteristics
a Venn diagram comparing protists to animals, plants and fungi

Save the concept maps as .PDF files, import into GarageBand and create a podcast that explains what you have learned.

•  Answer this question from your textbook:  We classify people in many ways – for example, by gender, race, religion, physical appearance, ethnic origin, profession, lifestyle, and so on.  How can classifying human beings be helpful?  How can it be harmful?
